When I looked up Dell laptops they listed 16 models that supposedly were optionally available with Ubuntu. However, I was only able to confirm that a couple of Latitudes and a few rather pricey Precision Workstations could actually be customized with Ubuntu. 
I'm sure it must be a demand thing and we can only hope that it will get more popular as an option with changes to Windows over time. Good thought on the developer angle, though.
